The Star: Ban is to ‘save’ fasting Muslims, says PAS Youth

This is what is reported in The Star:

ALOR SETAR: PAS Youth has defended the Kedah state government’s ban on nightspots during Ramadan, saying it is to “save” Muslims who were fasting during the holy month.

Its committee member Mohd Firdaus Jaafar, who is Jerai MP, said the move was to ensure that Muslims become closer to God and do not indulge in sinful activities.

He said the ruling to close the nightspots for a month was based on the state Entertainment Enactment 1997 which was passed in the state assembly 14 years ago during Barisan Nasional rule.

He said the Sultan of Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah had consented to the enactment.

“What the state government is implementing is not based on a new legislation.

“But some quarters do not understand this and are turning it into a big issue,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He said the ban was only for the fasting month and other entertainment outlets such as bowling and snooker centres and cyber cafes were allowed to operate.

I have to say well done and I am happy to hear that Kedah government lead by PAS and PAS Youth is taking the right action. Congratulations in making such move concerning Muslims community in Kedah. I also believe this step taken by Kedah state government should be followed suit by other states, especially Pakatan Rakyat’s state government. I would like to see the same action taken in Penang and Selangor, as an exemplary act that Pakatan Rakyat is doing better than Barisan Nasional.

However, for a moment, let us ponder this line in the report:

He said the ruling to close the nightspots for a month was based on the state Entertainment Enactment 1997 which was passed in the state assembly 14 years ago during Barisan Nasional rule.

Did I read it wrongly and having misunderstanding? Based on the words above, it means Barisan Nasional do actually have initiations and effort for Islam too. Hmm…

Question on the street: Will DAP really understand the move made, or will just backing off as they do not have large say in Kedah state government?
