It has been years since we have won the Thomas Cup. The last was in 1992, where the Sidek’s sons played important role in winning the cup, with the finishing provided Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang in the men double. It was a glorious moment for Malaysians. Millions pairs of eyes witnessed how tight it was in the final. With Indonesian team line up made of top world class players, Malaysian team was at their best.
Who can not forget the night.. it started with Rashid Sidek (current Malaysian team coach) played against Ardy Wiranata. The game went rubber set, and glad we were. Our first pair (Razif and Jalani Sidek) too were dragged into the rubber set against Rudy Gunawan and Eddy Hartono, before losing. 1-1, and it didn’t finished that easy. Alan Budi Kesuma was no match that night against Foo Kok Keong.
It was then, the nervous moment, Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang against one of the top pair shuttlers – Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja. With 2-1 leading, the pair were our best bet since Joko Supriyanto was also on top form, and on paper was much better than Kwan Yoke Meng. It looked well, when Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang won the first game. However, as said earlier, Rexy-Ricky were one of best pair for men doubles. They fought back and won the second set. Clearly, Indonesia wouldn’t let Malaysian won that easy.
It was then the moments in third set. Every single hit was cheered. Every single hit was with hope it will get either team get a point. Of course, with Malaysian team playing at home, Malaysian supporters seems to have the upper hand (but do bear in mind.. we also can crumble due to too much pressure). 15-8 was the game and how the win was celebrated. Every single Malaysian soul that watched the game that night celebrated and some with tears of joy. As far as I can remember, most houses nearby tune on the channel to watch the game and how I can hear shouts of happiness and joy when Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang won the game. 3-1 and we were Thomas Cup Champion for the fifth time.

However, that was years ago. 18 years ago and since, we still unable to achieve the same. The year 2000 when we last to be the host nation, but we were unable to reach even the semis. We lose out to Korea and Denmark in the group stage. (Source here)
10 years later, 2010… Thomas Cup is here once again for grab. China have won it three times in a row and looking for the fourth. Can we be the one to take the Cup from them?
This Sunday will be the start of the moments of truth whether Malaysians can share the excitment of 1992’s glory.
